When Eric Bedell decided to apply for the DPO of the Year Award, he saw it as a way to bring back to the Data Protection community. “The DPO of the Year should be an Ambassador”, he says.

Data Protection and Privacy principles gain popularity, as people start to understand what it means to share personal data with a company as well as the impact on one’s personal life in the event of a data breach.

“A DPO should not be a ‘veto-kind-of-person’.”

In this interview, Eric Bedell describes his case-by-case approach to data protection. As a long-standing handball player, he sees teamwork as a key success factor, using everyone’s strengths to build a strong team. Heading an international team, he also explains why culture plays an important role in building a privacy programme.

“I encourage DPOs to connect with their peers.”

Luxembourg DPOs form a close-knit community that exchanges on a regular basis. He sees great opportunities in extending this community, Luxembourg being a small but very active country.
